Zimbabwean Maurice Levy originally established the company in the United States several years ago. But today, under new ownership, it is in London that Amanzi is really making its mark—with a range of 150 single-origin teas and blends, its wonderful team of highly trained staff, its precise brewing method, its buzzy yet relaxing atmosphere, and a range of delicious and thoughtfully chosen foods. David Elghanayan opened this central London flagship store, working with Amanzi in the States and testing the model in the UK over eight years before choosing Marylebone for its attractive village feel and the fact that the area is busy seven days a week. His long-term goal is to open more shops in London and then to take the concept nationwide.
When it opened in February 2013, Amanzi quickly became popular with customers of all ages (especially younger tea lovers in their 20s and 30s). Seats outside on the wide pavement suit fresh-air lovers, and even on gloomy, wet days, a generous awning shelters tea drinkers from the rain. Inside, the ground floor is stylish and sleek with black tables, chairs, and benches set against beautiful Victorian tiles in black-and-white geometric patterns.
