Even today, getting freshly plucked leaves from field to factory and from factory to market is difficult and time consuming because of the region’s topography and infrastructure. (One can only wonder how the East India Company of the 19th century ever managed to transport tea without the aid of motorized vehicles.) But most estate managers would say that transportation challenges are minor when compared with the labor shortages they face.
