After a 21-year career in the corporate sector of the restaurant industry, Louisa Magoon found herself looking for a job when the company she worked for was sold. Rather than go through the painstaking apply-and-interview process, she took her husband’s advice to turn her love for tea into her own business. In 2011, she opened The Grand Tea Room with the help and support of her family, particularly her daughter, who works in the tearoom and is in charge of the ever-evolving menu.

“I love going to tea,” Louisa says. “We’ve gotten to know so many people through this business, and I’ve learned so much.”

Located in a retail space in Escondido, just north of San Diego, The Grand Tea Room is decorated with antique hats, fine china, and painted murals, providing the perfect setting for a relaxing teatime. Each table is carefully decorated with a theme and china pattern of its own.

Visitors have several options for taking tea, from The Grand Tea at $29.95 per person, which includes soup, savories, fresh fruit, a scone, desserts, and freshly steeped tea from the shop’s selection of 45 teas, to the Cream Tea at $11.95 per person, a lighter option that includes fresh fruit, a scone, and a pot of tea. While most of the fare changes throughout the year, Louisa says they make sure to always serve basic tea sandwiches like chicken salad and cucumber.

“I think what makes us stand out is our great service, delicious food, and nice ambiance,” Louisa adds. In addition to all these notable qualities, the venue has a well-stocked gift shop for patrons to peruse.

The Grand Tea Room is open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with afternoon tea times at 11:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are also welcome.
