From the glistening Baccarat crystal chandeliers to the wonderful array of antiques to the beautiful tapestries, the opulence of The Westgate Hotel, situated just outside the bustling Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego, is apparent more than in just the hotel’s interior. The tea service also reflects the hotel’s dedication to creating an elegant ambiance for visitors.

“Our afternoon-tea service has been a Westgate tradition since the hotel opened in 1970,” Food & Beverage Manager Yacine Chouaib says. “The atmosphere and décor is classic European. Our approach [for tea] is a formal California interpretation.”

Guests attending afternoon tea at The Westgate, which was designed to resemble the grand Palace of Versaille, will indulge in decadent treats while listening to the relaxing sounds of the harp. Set up in the traditional British order—savories, scones, and sweets—each course is presented on silver two-tiered trays displaying bites such as Baja prawn, cucumber, and cilantro cream cheese canapés; chicken and egg salad sandwiches with tarragon rémoulade; and seasonally crafted assorted pastries. Diners have their choice from seven different high-quality teas and have the option to add Champagne for a small upcharge to enjoy with the decadent fare.
