The Union Jack hanging in the window of British Marketplace— located in a self-effacing strip mall—is sure to pique the interest of any passersby, and tea wares and fare displayed prominently in the adjacent window are certain to draw in fervent Anglophiles or tea aficionados. Venturing inside, customers are in for a pleasant surprise. As the name suggests, the shop holds a variety of items customarily seen in the U.K.—from English chocolates to more than 200 teas and from sausages to football (soccer) shirts. Originally from Wales, owner David Williams opened the store approximately 17 years ago with the desire to bring British goods to the Miami–Fort Lauderdale area, and soon after expanded to open the Let’s Have Tea tearoom.

Diners have a variety of different services from which to choose for afternoon tea, from the popular Royal High Tea, which is $27.95 per person and offers an array of savories, scones, and sweets, to the aptly named Jubilee High Tea, which is $34.95 per person and includes Welsh potato and leek soup, an assemblage of canapés and finger sandwiches, homemade English scones, a selection of desserts, and two different tea options per table. According to David, all the tea services can be adapted for those with food sensitivities, so long as diners mention any dietary restrictions when making a reservation. Guests have a nice selection of different teas to enjoy with their meal.

“We serve the table almost to the point of obsession,” David says. “The customer is buying an experience, and we want to make it worth it for them.”

Let’s Have Tea tearoom, which is popular for special occasions, and the British Marketplace are open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5:00 p.m., Sundays. Reservations for afternoon tea are required.
