Raised in Derbyshire, England, Tina Jesson vividly remembers learning “farmhouse cooking” from her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. “We would grow vegetables in the garden and use them in our cooking,” Tina reccalls. “I remember going out to the garden and picking plums and raspberries, and my grandmother would do her magic and produce these wonderful jams.”

After moving to the United States in 2008, Tina decided to bring her family’s style of farmhouse cooking to her new community by selling fresh scones at farmers markets throughout Indianapolis. In 2014, Tina felt it was time to offer her customers more British fare and opened her first tearoom in Carmel. She has since added another location in Columbus.

Inspired by an amazing afternoon-tea experience at Bettys in Harrogate, Tina seeks to provide patrons an exceptional experience with items like her grandmother’s Green Tomato Chutney and traditional cakes and pastries like the Victoria Sandwich Cake. “Our goal is to make sure there are authentic, historical British recipes on the menu,” Tina says.

Guests looking to enjoy a classic tea service can choose from the Queen’s Royal High Tea for $25 per person, which offers a variety of delicacies on a three-tiered stand with a pot of tea; or the Young Lord/Lady High Tea for $20 per person. The Little Prince(ss) High Tea, at $15 per person, is the perfect introduction to afternoon tea for children ages 12 and under. Visitors may choose to enjoy the brew of their choice from a selection of more than 20 different teas and blends. There is also a full lunch menu with soups, salads, sandwiches, and British favorites like cornish pasties and Coronation chicken.

Tina’s Traditional Old English Kitchen is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday, at the Carmel location, and from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, at the Columbus location. Afternoon tea is served all day. While walk-ins are welcome, reservations are recommended.

The Indiana locations of Tina’s Traditional Old English Kitchen are currently closed, and Tina’s Traditional Bakery & Afternoon Teas is now located in Pinfold Cottage, Pinfold Lane • Bradley, Ashbourne • Derbyshire DE6 1PN.
